Songs of Sandy Denny at the Barbican

Radio Times
Review by:
Mark Braxton

This coming together of musicians before an ultra-polite audience to celebrate folkstress Sandy Denny unfurls a stream of delightful surprises. You’d expect to see the likes of quintessentially English vocalist Maddy Prior, and Fairport Convention guitarist Jerry Donohue; not so much Green Gartside from agit-popsters Scritti Politti, indie darling Joan as Police Woman or soul star PP Arnold.

All give their own spins to the work of Denny, Fairport’s lead singer, who died aged just 31. Nautical imagery predominates, but her moving melodies and haunting lyrics are accessible to all: just listen to The Sea or No More Sad Refrains.

About this programme

A tribute concert to the singer-songwriter, who collaborated with Led Zeppelin during her solo career, but is perhaps best remembered for her time as a member of Fairport Convention. Featuring performances by Maddy Prior, Jerry Donahue, former Fairport violinist Dave Swarbrick, Green Gartside, Lavinia Blackwall and PP Arnold, interspersed with interviews, backstage insights and archive footage.
