Border patrols have been the subject of many a macho shock-doc. Dooley paints a more sobering picture. In a ramshackle town, she meets desperate Mexicans and Guatemalans who have paid a “coyote” their life savings to guide them across the Arizona desert.
Even if these “illegals” manage to evade the immigration officers, the searing heat and insufficient supplies often cause the five-day trek to end in tragedy. And waiting are disgruntled Americans, determined to take the law into their own hands.
