Have you had enough of Holmesian heroes yet? We’ve had House; Sherlock and the new Elementary brought us two more; and let’s face it Patrick Jane has always been a tousled Californian version — able to see through people and spot clues that regular plods miss. We love these damaged know-alls and yes, it’s good to have Jane back, even though, as season five opens he continues to combine his more lovable traits (puncturing machismo, solving crimes) and his obnoxious ones (smug condescension, waistcoats) in equal measure.
The aftershock of last season’s conclusion is still reverberating. The FBI blew our heroes’ best chance of collaring serial killer Red John — and shot a CBI agent in the process. Now the two agencies are called on to collaborate on a new case, which they do much in the manner of two cats collaborating in a sack. But what’s this? The icy FBI chief is played by wonderful Polly Walker — great news.
