I must be one of a tiny minority who has not watched any of the recent spate of Swedish crime drama on the television. Now I understand what I have been missing.
Writing in Radio Times, Mark Lawson voted the Martin Beck novels of Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo in at number six on his list of the top 17 European fictional supersleuths. This intricately plotted and sublimely intelligent thriller shows why he rates the writers so highly.
The clues are almost non-existent and their Swedish detective team works as hard as the listener to fathom who the killer of a sex-mad 20-something is. It is an exquisite piece of writing, as taut as a strangler’s hands.
