Before we chain ourselves to railings to demand the overdue release of Mr Bates from prison, an innocent man wrongly convicted of murder, it seems that his wife Anna has done the hard work for us.
We know her diligent search for the truth behind the death of Bates’s wife Vera has unearthed a new witness, someone who holds the key to his exoneration and freedom. But Bates’s chances of leaving that ghastly cell for ever look like they’ve been blown when circumstances, and possibly someone who wishes him ill, conspire against him.
Back in the chintzy luxury of Downton Abbey, relations between Matthew and Robert become frosty when Matthew has a few hard words to say about the running of the estate. And in the village, Isobel invites the Crawley women to a lunch cooked by ill-used Ethel. Just wait till Mr Carson gets wind of this grotesque insult to decorum.
