Downton Abbey

Series 3 - Episode 4

Downton Abbey
Radio Times
Review by:
Alison Graham

A life of lonely spinsterhood settles on Lady Edith like a shroud made of cat hairs. But she’s a spirited woman so she decides to protest at the limits to women’s suffrage by sending a letter to The Times. Granny Violet is aghast: “No lady writes to a newspaper.”

The usually sedate country house is a crucible of political turmoil, what with Lady Edith’s campaigning and fears for pregnant Sybil in a turbulent Ireland. It’s not too long before the Troubles become very close to home for everyone at Downton. The Earl is furious and does lots of pompous and manly shouting about it in the drawing room after dinner.

But others have far more personal reasons for feeling unhappy. Just look at poor Anna and the incarcerated Bates, both floundering in pools of despair.
