Downton Abbey

Series 3 - Episode 3

Downton Abbey
Radio Times
Review by:
Alison Graham

There’s a big celebration at Downton Abbey, but morose Robert is in no mood to join in the fun now that the unthinkable has become the thinkable — Downton must go. There’s no money left in the Crawley kitty. Apart from Matthew’s unexpected fortune, of course, but he’s obstinately refusing to cough it up for the benefit of his persistent wife’s family.

Ah well, what are the Crawleys to do but up sticks and move to another house, which they have decided to name Downton Place. It’s a sumptuous country pad that everyone treats as if it’s a diseased tenement. Where
will the Dowager live, she wants to know? “We still own most of the village,” says her son-in-law. So that’s all right.

Meanwhile, Mrs Hughes has to keep an important appointment, and there’s a sweet scene when Mr Carson is overwhelmed by affection.
