The Simpsons

Series 23 - 19. Totally Fun Thing That Bart Will Never Do Again

Murmurs that The Simpsons isn’t what it used to be will be silenced by this beautifully crafted episode. It’s full of poignant moments that show an unexpectedly thoughtful side to Bart as he deals with a mid-childhood crisis. Dulled by his everyday life, he finds escape aboard the most entertaining cruise ship ever. Only to realise that, once the cruise is over, it’s back to monotony.

While that may sound more Bergman than Barbera, the writers lighten the existential angst with jokes about having sex on boats, a cracking, witty show tune from Steve Coogan as a chipper cruise director, and a rant from Homer about the stress of family holidays.

About this programme

19/22. Bart persuades his family to go on a cruise, and for once the Simpsons enjoy their holiday - Lisa bonds with other intelligent children while Marge and Homer get some rare time alone. But when Bart embarks on an inspired yet morally dubious plan to prolong the trip indefinitely, things take a turn for the worse. With the guest voices of Steve Coogan and Treat Williams.
