This chronicle, narrated by Johnnie Walker, of one of rock’s most idiosyncratic and idolised bands is compiled exclusively from BBC archive snippets (probably the best way to do it given Morrissey’s legendary reticence).
So it’s just as well the Beeb has plenty of treasures to exhume, from Top of the Pops and Old Grey Whistle Test performances to the John Peel and David Jensen sessions that formed the core of their essential LP Hatful of Hollow. Morrissey even popped up for incongruous appearances on Pop Quiz, Pop Jury and Pebble Mill at One.
With the 30th anniversary of their debut single on the horizon, perhaps it’s time for a Smiths night on BBC4. We’ll certainly never see their like again.
