This is great fun. TV stalwarts Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty, friends since they were Essex schoolboys, finally make a series together. And by the look of it, they have an absolute blast. The main idea (there are lots of different ones going on at once) is that they celebrate the best British foods and pitch them against foreign rivals, starting with cheese, England v France. But they also invite celebrity pals to join them at a pop-up café on Southend pier (this week it’s Alan Carr), drive around in an 80s Ford Capri a lot, and eat takeaways while riding a rollercoaster.

It’s all silly, scrambly, boysy fun — imagine a gastro-Top Gear with laugh-out-loud moments, including a game of fig-roll Russian roulette and Jamie walking the streets disguised as a cow.

About this programme

1/4. Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty open a seaside cafe in Southend, Essex, inviting friends, locals and celebrity guests to try their culinary creations. The pair also hit the road, travelling around Europe to find out how the nation's favourite dishes stack up against foreign alternatives. In the first edition, comedian and chat-show host Alan Carr drops by the cafe, and Jamie and Jimmy compare a range of British and French cheeses.
