Queen of Tigers: Natural World Special

Radio Times
Review by:
Alison Graham

Here’s a chance to eavesdrop on opulence, peek at the lives of people so wealthy that “austerity” to them might just as well be the name of a new perfume.Though a massive advert for Claridge’s, a glossy five-star hotel in London, Jane Treays’s documentary is irresistible. We see preparations for a foreign princess and her 27 female guests: “The princess wants a very very soft bed,” says a housekeeper, and that’s what she gets, cushioned by four duvets.

Then there are the handwritten welcome cards, left for every
guest. How does one address U2’s The Edge? “You can’t write, ‘Dear
Mr The Edge’,” tuts general manager Thomas Kochs.
