An Island Parish

Series 7 - 3. Bolt from the Blue

A large cloud hangs over this episode of a series that’s always so sunny in aspect and outlook. There’s a dreadful accident on Sark: one of the island’s horse-drawn carriages overturns, killing one of its passengers, a Swiss tourist.

The accident tests Sark’s tractor-drawn emergency services (cars are banned on the island) as word spreads that “something terrible has happened at the bottom of the hill”. The critically injured tourist has to be rushed by speedboat to hospital on nearby Guernsey, where she later dies. The islanders are united in sadness and, says the commentary, are forced to consider if the tragedy could “change island life for good”.

About this programme

3/6. Karen Le Mouton recovers from her injury in time to welcome the president of the Methodist Church to Sark, but the appalling weather threatens to scupper her plans for entertainment.
