Radio Times

Alison Graham

In February 1996, 14-year-old Tanya Kach from McKeesport, near Pittsburgh, vanished after setting off for school. She re-emerged ten years later to tell an extraordinary story of kidnap and control.

Kach says she was kept as a “sex slave” by a school security guard, Thomas Hose, a man 24 years older. She lived in his parents’ tiny house, seemingly without their knowledge. True Stories talks to Kach and key figures in the case, including her family, police and schoolfriends.

Her captor was sentenced to 15 years in prison, although many locals refuse to believe Kach’s story. Here she prepares to return to McKeesport to face the doubters.

About this programme

The astounding story of Tanya Kach made international headlines when she revealed she had been kept in captivity for 10 years by school security guard Thomas Hose, just a stone's throw from her home in Pennsylvania. This programme gains an insight into how a 14-year-old girl could simply vanish in 1996, only to resurface a decade later still living within the same community, and Tanya, now 31, talks about her ordeal. With contributions by friends and family, plus the police officers who worked on the missing persons investigation.
