Nucky (Steve Buscemi) is really in trouble now. This series is so good at conveying a sense of power and how it works – or at least how it might have worked among well-dressed gangsters in 1920s America, perhaps not as different from contemporary business as you’d hope.
But Boardwalk Empire is also good at conveying the moments when power drains away and a once feared figure is left alone and exposed. We’ve seen it with Eli and the Commodore, and after last week’s terrible attack Nucky is badly exposed, too. He’s concussed, confused and delirious, just when he needs to marshal his allies. It makes for a dark, shocking episode.
