Gillian Anderson made a splendid, withered-but-still-ravishing Miss Havisham in last Christmas’s BBC1 version of Great Expectations. In early publicity stills Helena Bonham Carter looks similarly doomed-yet-winsome in her ruined wedding garb as the barmy eternal spinster in director Mike Newell’s film version, released next week.
She takes her place tonight alongside Norton regular Jack Whitehall, surfing the crest of a comedy wave with his successful TV shows Fresh Meat and Bad Education, and lovely Michael Palin, whose Brazilian odyssey ended on BBC1 last week. Music comes from the charming and funny Michael Bublé.
