It’s coming to something when the couch gags at the start are the best things in The Simpsons, but tonight’s episode shows that it’s a trend that looks set to continue. After a brilliant parody of the Game of Thrones opening credits — with the Wall replaced by the Couch — there’s a toothless satire on the overblown hype surrounding graffiti artists, with a pointless subplot involving the Kwik-E-Mart losing business to a wholefood market.

The crux of the story is the age-old battle between Bart and Homer, but even here the writers duck what could have been a delicious moment of Homeric revenge and offer a weak ending.

About this programme

15/22. Bart begins tagging Springfield with unflattering references to Homer, and his work is seen by professional graffiti artists Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal (playing themselves) who invite the troublemaker to showcase his work in a gallery show. Meanwhile, Apu is worried that a new health food shop will threaten the Kwik-E-Mart's future.
