BBC Proms 2012

John Wilson on Broadway

Tickets sold out in the blink of an eye for The Broadway Sound concert, which surprised no one because this is a complete treat and a Proms highlight from the mighty John Wilson Orchestra. Doubtless a good chunk of the audience will also be there to hear Seth Macfarlane, creator of the scabrous Family Guy and American Dad, and possessor of a milk-chocolate baritone.

The playlist is divine, a fantastic romp through some of the great show tunes from some of the greatest musicals ever. You’ll know them all: from the gorgeous Younger than Springtime from South Pacific, to the showstopping Don’t Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl. Lovely.

About this programme

From London's Royal Albert Hall, conductor John Wilson and his orchestra are joined by the Maida Vale Singers to pay tribute to the composers and arrangers responsible for creating the Broadway Sound - among them such legendary tunesmiths as Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Frank Loesser and Leonard Bernstein. The concert includes show-stopping songs from Show Boat, On Your Toes, Brigadoon, Porgy and Bess, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof. Presented by Katie Derham. First broadcast on Radio 3 on August 27.
