Elton John is, unquestionably, a gifted artist but he has painted himself into an ugly corner with years of excess, hissy fits and pomposity. Or is that just a media myth? After reading my colleague Stuart Maconie’s recent column, I listened to this with fresh ears.
There are odd moments where his references to being the hippest music aficionado of the 1960s are grating but, for the majority of this two-hour broadcast, he sounds generous of spirit, good-humoured and as if he cares about his listeners. What more could one ask for from a DJ? It’s also a blessed relief to get a really wide sweep of music on a mainstream channel — and I mean rarely heard tracks not just different genres.
