When BBC3 commissioned this fast-turnaround documentary about the multiple killings at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado in July, they could hardly have expected the story would then be overtaken by shocking news of another lone-gunman rampage, this time at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.
But the issues for reporter Amal Fashanu remain the same: why do Americans hold fast to the principle of gun ownership so dear? And why does the principle so frequently backfire in a history of shocking mass murders? She visits Colorado to speak to survivors and sample public opinion on an issue that even in US election year sits low on the political agenda.
About this programme
Amal Fashanu talks to survivors of the massacre at a showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, on July 20. Young Americans reveal their attitudes towards gun ownership, which is enshrined in the US Constitution, and share their views on whether gunman James Holmes should face the death penalty for his actions.
