Lord Lucan, who disappeared in 1974, could well be our most notorious missing grown-up, but what of the hundreds of adults who go AWOL every single day in the UK? Here, Penny Marshall reports from the UK Missing Persons’ Bureau, speaking to officers and families involved.

As “mature” adults, you could argue we have the right to get the hell out if we choose. Not so the young; at the time of writing, 12-year-old Tia Sharp had still not been found. The concluding episode, on the agony of a missing child, will be especially poignant.
