Describing Person of Interest as a thriller about hi-tech New York vigilantes who prevent crimes doesn’t quite do it justice. The series manages to dress itself in a mystique that implies it’s also a profound comment on surveillance, big business and “the decline of western civilisation”, as limping billionaire Arnold Finch (one of the vigilantes) sighed last week.
This week’s episode goes heavier on the on-screen graphics: hardly a scene goes by without a couple of grainy CCTV-style shots: we’re encouraged to see everyone as pawns of “the Machine”, the government supercomputer (designed by Finch) that tracks everyone everywhere. But underneath the sci-fi-ish air of doom, it’s rattling good fun.
