A ten-year pregnancy may sound elephantine but as Miranda, a midwife from the recurrent miscarriage clinic at Saint Mary’s Hospital, explains, when a woman has lost several babies it can easily feel that long. Miranda, Claire and Gretta are three specialist midwives who help 1,000 women a year through problem pregnancies.
Teenager Mary’s diabetes, for instance, means she’s at risk of having a stillborn child (Saint Mary’s deal with about 50 a year), while Kelly’s transplanted kidney causes terrifying risks for her. But when any of their patients deliver safely, the tearful midwives couldn’t be more relieved and more thrilled if they’d given birth themselves.
About this programme
