Sweden’s 2002 adaptation of Henning Mankell’s book — dare I say it? — easily surpasses the Kenneth Branagh version. It’s directed by Birger Larsen, who went on to helm series one of The Killing, and with a muted palette, grainy shots and razor-sharp editing, at times it feels like the horror thriller Se7en. Unfolding over four episodes (two tonight), it follows the murders of old men with a history of wife-beating, but allows time for a romance for Kurt and run-ins with his father.
