We’re about as far away from cosy Weatherfield as you can get here as Sue Cleaver (Eileen), Ryan Thomas (Jason), Brooke Vincent (Sophie) and Ben Price (Nick) jet out to Kenya on a mission to use performing arts to educate people on HIV and drug abuse. As you’d imagine, there’s shock at the sight of the slums of Mombasa and tears as the cast members meet the local children.

There are an estimated one million orphans in Kenya, largely because the children have lost their parents to Aids. As Ryan says after visiting an orphanage, “We complain about so much, but if you came here and saw what these guys have, you would never complain again.”

About this programme

1/2. Part one of two. Coronation Street's Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw), Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw), Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster) and Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) team up to stage a play in Kenya about the dangers of HIV. Working with a local charity and using their soap know-how, they have just two weeks to recruit new actors and hold workshops and rehearsals leading up to the performance, which they hope will spread their important message.
