Satirist Craig Brown describes himself as a contrarian, “religious in an empty church, atheist in a full one”, a man who claims he will unabashedly offend anyone but who comes over as a warm-hearted family man with a wealth of good-natured stories from his life.
It’s a fact borne out by his musical choices, which range from an opera aria to the theme tune to a famously cheesy TV drama. And though he describes himself as having developed at public school a carapace around his emotions, his voice does crack as he introduces one particularly resonant piece of music.
