If Stuart Pearce’s team make it all the way to the final (and they would most likely have had to beat Brazil to get there), this could be your one chance to see a Great Britain football team lift a trophy. Normally, Britain plays international football as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but none of these nations are members of the Olympic movement, so Team GB has been specially created for these Games and we may not see its like again.

As for today’s clash, it’s sure to be a break with the past: Argentina were finalists in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008, taking gold both times. In their absence, rivals Brazil — who qualified over Argentina and were the only team with a 100 per cent record in the group stages — will hope to be flying the flag for South America.

About this programme

Mexico v Brazil (Kick-off 3.00pm). Jake Humphrey is at Wembley Stadium to present coverage of the men's football final, as the successors to Argentina will be decided. Mexico have won entertaining matches against Senegal and Japan to reach this stage, but go into this match as underdogs against a talented Brazilian side that swept aside Great Britain's conquerors South Korea 3-0 in the semi-finals. With analysis by Alan Hansen and Robbie Savage.
