On this enchanting odyssey into the red granite heart of the bleakly lovely Cairngorms – at their best and most glorious in the snow – we visit a painter, go on a grouse-flushing expedition, watch fearless types dig themselves a snow hole (the mountains are deadly cold and treacherous in winter), and stand up to the knees in the bubbling, champagne-fresh River Dee with redoubtable 91-year-old “Mrs C” on her annual fishing trip with her favourite ghillie.
