While the eventing and showjumping are about power and pace, dressage is an altogether daintier discipline, with riders scored on their ability to lead their horse through a series of pre-planned manoeuvres. Britain has never won a dressage medal, but that looks set to change this year, as all three Team GB riders are ranked in the top five in the world. Charlotte Dujardin is on world-beating form this year, becoming the first British rider to score more than 90 per cent in a freestyle round, in July. Team-mates Laura Bechtolsheimer and Carl Hester are also in with a chance. “The absence of the world record-breaking Totilas, whose German rider Matthias Rath hasn’t recovered from glandular fever in time for the Games, opens up an opportunity for Team GB,” says BBC commentator Mike Tucker.

About this programme

Jake Humphrey presents this afternoon's coverage on day 13 of the Games, featuring men's sailing and BMX, and the conclusion of the individual dressage equestrian discipline. The first action comes from Weymouth with Shirley Robertson, where the men's 470 sailing medal race heads towards a climax, before attention shifts to the BMX Track in the Olympic Park at 3.00, for the men's quarter-finals. There is also coverage of the concluding stages of the dressage Grand Prix Freestyle at Greenwich Park, where the medals will be decided, with Britain represented by Laura Bechtolsheimer, Richard Davison, Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester. The commentary teams include Richard Simmonds, Ed Leigh and Michael Tucker.
