In this sequel to the widely acclaimed Boniface and Me, Nell Porter (Harriet Walter) resolves to find out whether paying school fees for one child in Zimbabwe will make a difference. The lucky recipient, a girl called Loveness Matakuro (Chipo Chung), is chosen for her literary knowledge, having devoured both the Oxford English Dictionary and a rain-soaked copy of Gulliver’s Travels.
Discovering talents she never knew she had, Loveness sees her world transformed for better and for worse by Nell’s gift, as her newfound ambition to play netball is realised, but mired by family tragedy. Based on a true story, this powerful drama is poignant, inspiring and above all optimistic. For beyond the cruelty and poverty of Mugabe’s regime, there is the reassuring message that education really can change lives.
