“Ricky is probably the most googled penguin in the world,” says his keeper Adrian proudly. It baffled me why anyone would look up individual penguins online, but Ricky the Rockhopper even has his own Facebook page, so I’m obviously missing something here.
Working so closely with animals every day means all the keepers at London Zoo and its countryside counterpart, Whipsnade, are besotted with their charges: Alex even admits that her gang of sea lions are her best friends. When you see the bond she has with them, you’ll understand.
About this programme
2/2. Part two of two. The programme reveals how the keepers entertain the 1.5 million visitors the Zoological Society of London receives annually. Among the most popular animals in the collection are the playful Californian sea lions, but with their pool being refurbished, keeper Alex has to relocate them, preventing her from teaching them a new routine. Meanwhile, monkey keeper Andrea is surprised to discover a newborn in an enclosure and Adrian tries to keep a pesky penguin under control. Sarah Lancashire narrates.
