Vangelis is renowned for making expressive, dramatic soundtracks for films and his choices here are for expressive, dramatic pieces ranging from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde to a Gil Evans arrangement for Miles Davis. He’s an expressive guest, too, talking of music in rapturous terms.

About this programme

Michael Berkeley meets Greek composer Vangelis, who achieved worldwide fame with his Academy Award-winning music for Hugh Hudson's Chariots of Fire, and recently provided a reworked score for the current stage production of the classic 1981 film. Vangelis's musical choices include Debussy's Sonata for flute, viola and harp, Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, solo cello music by Bach, Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, Mozart's Concerto for flute and harp, and music by Gil Evans.
