David and Miriam are a charming couple, members of the Old Order Amish church, where they are expected to adhere to strict rules or face the worst possible sanction, excommunication.
But the couple are prepared to risk being shunned by those they hold most dear by inviting a BBC camera crew into their lives to film their daily tasks. This is a big deal, as even posing for photos is strictly forbidden by the Amish, let alone allowing yourself to be filmed for broadcast.
Although both David and Miriam are very smiley and happy, you can see the steel beneath. Both want to see changes within their community and, as we see, they’re not alone.
About this programme
A British documentary crew is allowed to film an Amish family from the religious group's strictest order. Miriam and David Lapp hope that by allowing the cameras into their home in Pennsylvania, they can help create a greater understanding of their way of life and faith. However, by agreeing to participate in the programme, they risk excommunication from their church, which forbids its members from consenting to be photographed. Narrated by Lindsay Duncan.
