There might not have been any attention-grabbing intellectual comets like Alex Guttenplan or Gail Trimble this year, but there have been some fiery team performances. Finalists York grappled with their opponents in some real belters, including a semi-final with Sheffield, whom they eventually beat 250 points to 155. But that was nothing compared to their exhaustingly thrilling quarter-final with Oxford Brookes, which York snatched by just five points. York will face Magdalen College, Oxford, so this probably isn't the time to wonder if there aren't too many Oxford and Cambridge teams in University Challenge. (But there are; they need weeding before the competition proper). As always, Jeremy "NO CONFERRING!" Paxman is the master of ceremonies.
