Rolf Lassgard (Sweden’s answer to Gerard Depardieu) is a shambling hulk as Kurt Wallander. In the conclusion of this two-part story, he quaffs vodka from a mug, listens to opera while poring over crime-scene photos – unaware of the significance of his missing keys. The killer lets himself into Kurt’s flat at night and stalks his daughter, Linda, in one of those tense cases where we know the killer’s identity long before the cops do.
Deranged teenager Stefan is scalping the creeps from a child sex ring that sent his sister into an institution. Superb naturalism from the young actors makes this adaptation all the more harrowing, and the outcome is somewhat different from the book’s.
