“This’ll be a hit,” said Radio Times on 13 May 2007, heralding a brand new comedy on BBC3. How right we were.
Tonight, Dave shows the first three episodes of Gavin & Stacey, the series that turned James Corden and Ruth Jones into superstars, netting two Baftas to boot in 2008 (one audience award, while Corden picked up a best comedy performance gong).
It gets off to a mildly lascivious start as long-distance sweethearts Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanne Page) first meet, flanked by their pals Smithy and Nessa (writers Corden and Jones). Then we settle down into the earthy, affectionate portrayal of close friends and family that was the recipe for a modern classic.
