Why is mayor Regina so keen that Mary Margaret suffers? Much is made clear as we turn back the clock to Regina’s life in fairyland before she was plucked by The West Wing’s Toby to be Snow White’s stepmother. Then, she was a simple girl who loved riding, her father and a handsome stable boy. This didn’t go down well with her magic-wielding mother (Barbara Hershey, not quite in Black Swan mode, but almost as ruthless).
It’s a neat trick to make the evil Regina sympathetic, though it seems harsh that all her rage is vented on the young Snow, when the true villain is right beside her…
