Barry Davies tells the story of the Olympics-on-a-shoestring at Wembley in 1948, including how 4,000 athletes were housed not in an Olympic Village but in army barracks, and how very few people even knew that British competitors, such as David Bond in the yachting in Torbay, had even won a gold medal.
About this programme
Barry Davies looks back at the 1948 London Olympics and investigates how Britain managed to host the event, despite being in an economic crisis following the Second World War. With no money to build new facilities, competitions were hosted in existing venues, including Wembley Stadium, while athletes were housed in army barracks and people's houses. The programme also features the memories of those who took part in the Games, including boxer Ron Cooper and sailing gold medallist David Bond.
