The Bad Boy Olympian

Radio Times
Review by:
Daniel Bettridge

The titular bad boy in this enjoyably stripped-bare documentary is Ashley McKenzie, a British medal hope who’ll compete in the judo event at London 2012. Suffering from ADHD, Ashley’s been hamstrung by his condition in the past and, on the evidence here, it’s easy to see why. He’s brash, mouthy and ill-disciplined, and it’s hard not to feel frustrated by his failure to realise his undoubted potential.

But Ashley’s a compelling character, and soon his supercharged interviews and refreshingly unguarded trains of thought will grab hold of your attention and simply refuse to let it go.

About this programme

Documentary following judo fighter Ashley McKenzie as he leaves his mother and childhood home to live with his no-nonsense coach. Despite being in line for a place at the London 2012 Olympics, his severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has resulted in four misconduct bans from the British squad in the past three years, and the move is an attempt to keep himself on track and ensure his behaviour does not jeopardise his chances of competing.
