Sue Perkins’s last road trip challenge was in Alaska with adventurer Charley Boorman. This time her companion is the jolly Liza Tarbuck. They’re bowling along the Ho Chi Minh Trail through the glorious scenery of Laos and Vietnam, which they suggest school-run mums should do before being allowed to drive a four-wheel-drive in suburbia. There’s a lot of shrieking laughter as they bounce over river crossings that look like they’ve been dusted with cocoa or get bogged down in thick mud, all the while avoiding unexploded bombs left over from the Vietnam War. “I’m a pansy blooming presenter broadcaster from England. I’m not Ross Kemp,” says Liza after deciding that peeking at a 750lb UXB on the roadside is not for her. It makes our motorway driving look like a walk in the park.
About this programme
2/3. Broadcasters Sue Perkins and Liza Tarbuck drive along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a network of roads and paths in Southeast Asia that was littered with unexploded bombs following the Vietnam War. Their journey takes them through jungles and mountains to some of the least-explored corners of Laos and Vietnam, and proves to be a gruelling test of their bravery, motoring skills and senses of humour.
