Episode 2. Ben & Lump

Ben & Lump
Radio Times

There are sweet touches in this moody drama about two young men in a seaside town. That mood - low-key scenes, eccentric minor characters, retro production design - suggests an homage to Wes Anderson.

The plot is slight to the point of vanishing: Ben comes back from university to find a new-found awkwardness with old friend Lump. But there’s definitely something here, including a quick, hilarious exchange between Ben and his friend’s dad. “Still bent?” the latter asks. “Very much so,” replies Ben.

About this programme

University student Ben pays a Christmas visit to his seaside home town, where childhood friend Lump still lives. Unlikely confidante Sister Margaret soon gets them busy with the festive tombola, but they are distracted by their own problems - unemployed Lump is being pressured into joining the Army, and Ben is missing his new boyfriend. The holiday season forces the pair to accept the different directions their lives have taken. Drama, starring Thomas Turgoose (This Is England).
