Just what the world needs… another Sherlock Holmes adaptation. We’ve had traditional Sherlock, modern-day Sherlock and in the US they’re soon going to see a Sherlock with a female Dr Watson. So with versions of his celebrated mutts-on-the-moor tale now well into double figures, it was going to take something a bit different to sustain interest.
Thankfully, this version from comedy theatre group Peepolykus just about carries it off. They enhance the familiar scenario with some off-the-wall tweaks and although some of the gags are wincingly corny, they still raise a smile. It sags a little in places, though, and I couldn’t help feeling that the cast, known for the physical nature of their live comedy, felt a little constrained by radio.
