Uma Thurman as Marilyn Monroe? No I can’t quite see it, either. But as manipulative movie star Rebecca Duvall, who’s been brought in to play Monroe in the musical, she’s certainly keeping the rest of the Smash cast on their toes. Despite more tedious digressions about Julia’s home life (her spoilt teenage son goes missing), this episode has terrific moments. Karen (Katharine McPhee) again sings like an angel on Snow Patrol’s Run in a nightclub. Later, a spat in a curry house morphs into a fantasy Bollywood number – and Karen’s straight-laced lover Dev has all the moves. It should come as small surprise: ten years ago Raza Jaffrey was in the original London cast of Bombay Dreams.
About this programme
12/15. Rebecca starts to bond with understudy Karen, while secretly assessing whether she might be a serious rival for her role. Julia and Frank panic when Leo goes missing, Tom and Ivy accuse Derek of losing control of the production, and Eileen takes Nick to see a show - but their night out is spoiled when they run into Jerry in the lobby.
