Even people who despise sport, who come out in itchy bumps at the very thought of football and cricket, have a bit of a soft spot for Wimbledon. It’s more like a civilised social occasion that lasts two weeks. And it appeals to our love of the plucky underdog, the poor blameless souls burdened with the yoke of “Great British Hope.” Andy Murray and more recently the charming Heather Watson know all about that.
But it’s nearly over as we reach the women’s singles final. RT doesn’t have psychic powers so we don’t know if Petra Kvitova will be defending their titles. But whoever strides out onto Centre Court, they should be boosted by the gladiatorial sense of occasion.
About this programme
Agnieszka Radwanska v Serena Williams. Sue Barker presents live coverage of the women's singles final at the All England Club, as the winner of the Venus Rosewater Dish claimed by Petra Kvitova last year is crowned. Kvitova was eliminated by Serena in the quarter-finals this time around, with the four-time champion then overcoming Victoria Azarenka in the last four, while Radwanska defeated Angelique Kerber in her semi-final and is bidding to win her maiden Grand Slam.
