About this programme

1/10. Jules Hudson discovers how members of the public contributed to the defence of the British Isles during the Second World War. He begins in Northern Ireland, where he learns how the citizens of Belfast survived one of the worst aerial bombardments of the conflict and helped raise enough money to build 17 Spitfire fighter planes. He also hears the story of a woman who tricked her employers so she could save the life of a baby elephant.
