It’s startling how the cross-currents of Bill Clinton’s presidency, as rehearsed in this wonderfully watchable series, seem so relevant today. In 1993 the president’s proposed federal budget sparked a Washington showdown after Clinton prioritised deficit reduction over the spending inititiatives many hoped for. His gamble was that cutting the deficit was essential to rescue the economy. Sound familiar? Meanwhile, scandal was not so much brewing as fizzing, popping and threatening to drown out everything else.
About this programme
2/3. The story of Bill Clinton's presidency continues by reflecting on how conflicts in Rwanda, Somalia and Bosnia provided a stern test of his foreign policy skills. Back in the USA, an investigation into an Arkansas company partly owned by the Clintons once again turned the spotlight on his family's affairs - while his Republican rivals, including House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich, gathered momentum among the electorate and prepared to launch an attack on the Democrats' budget.
