Buying a chainsaw for a self-confessed accident-prone person with a fear of machinery is possibly ill-advised. But when British poet James Lasdun moved to a rural community in New York State, the birthday gift from his wife was an essential tool for managing his land.

In this emotive programme, Lasdun uses his poetry to tell the fish-out-of water story of how he adapted to life in the wild — and how the men of the wild reacted to him. And if you ever doubted the toughness of the logging community, listen out for the story about the bears and the dentures.

About this programme

Poet and writer James Lasdun learns how to chop down trees with the help of champion axemen at the Lumberjack World Championships held in Hayward, Wisconsin. He describes how he was given a chainsaw by his wife when he moved to New York State, as the resurgent forests of America's eastern states threatened to encroach on his property.
