Another member of the old guard turns up tonight: Cliff Barnes, once a bumbling loser, now a powerful businessman. JR, though, isn’t convinced that there’s been much of a change – “I do recall the smell of brimstone and crazy,” he sneers before shooing him out of Southfork.
This reunion of two old warring dinosaurs is terrifically nostalgic and well played, but isn’t quite the best scene of the episode. That honour goes to a tense standoff in an up-market barbershop, which features JR shaving his son’s neck with a cut-throat razor: “I loved my Daddy and I respected my Daddy, but most importantly, I feared my Daddy,” rumbles Larry Hagman with palpable menace.
About this programme
3/10. JR coolly puts paid to John Ross's plan to double-cross him, and decides to move back to Southfork. However, the Ewings face more problems when their old adversary Cliff Barnes (played by original series star Ken Kercheval) resurfaces and tries to repair his relationship with his nephew Christopher. Meanwhile, Tommy has an intriguing piece of news for Rebecca, and Ann catches sight of skulduggery in the stables. With Carlos Bernard (24).
