The power and unpredictable nature of weather has captivated us for centuries. Charlie Connelly’s supremely interesting book is born of our meteorological obsession and imparts some amazing facts on a range of phenomena, beginning with rain.

With the downpours we’ve had this summer, who’d believe that London is the sixth driest city in Europe? And apparently, on average, each square kilometre of ground in England and Wales is hit by lightning twice a year. Far from feeling like a stuffy science lesson, Connelly’s lightness of touch ensures an entertaining read. I have just one gripe, though: in this abridged version of Bring Me Sunshine… there’s little mention of intoxicating summer heat.
