The Last Night of the Proms is always a big, special patriotic occasion, but this year’s feels more special and more patriotic than usual as it provides a musical full stop to what has been the most sensational of summers.
After the wild success of the Olympics and Paralympics, maybe we’ll all be singing Land of Hope and Glory just that little bit more loudly from our sofas. Maybe we will even wave a flag.
You all know what to expect, a massive party with live music in a great venue, as Jiri Belohlavek bids farewell as chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
About this programme
Katie Derham introduces the grand finale to the 118th season of Henry Wood Promenade concerts, live from London's Royal Albert Hall. Violinist Nicola Benedetti and tenor Joseph Calleja join forces with the BBC Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, under chief conductor Jiri Belohlavek, to perform popular operatic arias by Verdi, Massenet and Puccini, the much-loved Bruch Violin Concerto and a choral work by Delius, one of 2012's anniversary composers. Continues on BBC1.
