If there were such a thing as a school of hard knocks, Shirley Carter graduated with flying colours years ago. Whenever she has been dealt a hard blow (and by heck she’s had several), she has usually responded with a swift backhander and a snarl. But finding out that Ben murdered ‘Ev and, worse, that Phil knew all about it, has almost destroyed her.
Taking refuge in a whisky bottle and hurtling towards rock bottom (and an uncomfortable spot in the gutter), Shirley, it would seem, has no one who’s able to help her – except maybe someone who left Walford for exotic shores about four years ago.
About this programme
Phil worries about Shirley's increasingly volatile and drunken behaviour, and makes a last-ditch phone call to the one person he thinks might be able to help. Janine grows more paranoid about Michael, especially after discovering a cheque stub for £20,000, while Jack's plan to impress Sharon backfires when he oversteps the mark with Dennis.
